Keys
All cars are sold with one working key.
Diesel Particulate Filter
A DPF is a filter that captures the soot produced by diesel engines to reduce emissions. After a certain amount of soot builds up in the DPF, it's burnt off to prevent the DPF from clogging up.
This process is called regeneration. Depending on your car, this will happen every couple of hundred miles and generally takes 10-15 minutes.
Many diesel engine problems start from a blocked DPF. The diesel particulate filter blocks when it's not given a chance to burn off the soot. Doing a large number of short journeys doesn't give the DPF a chance to regenerate.
A DPF warning light commonly looks like an exhaust or some fumes with lots of dots in the middle and may also cause the engine management light to appear.
If you get a warning light to show the filter is blocked you should drive for 20 or 30 minutes at speeds of over 40mph.
If you ignore a DPF warning light and continue to drive in a slow, stop/start pattern, soot will build up in the filter until your car goes into limp mode. This restricted performance mode is to prevent damage.
Stop/Start Technology
The purpose of Stop/Start technology is to reduce the amount of pollution caused by vehicles, specifically emissions released into the air when cars and vans are idling or stuck in slow-moving traffic.
Start-stop technology is automatic and works by detecting a lack of vehicle movement. When it detects the brake pedal is pressed and the car is out of gear, the engine control unit trigger the ignition to turn the engine off.
When you're ready to move again and release the brake, put your foot down onto the clutch and place gear, the system will send a message to the car to start again.
You can choose to turn the system off, usually through a dash button with an 'A' on it.
Stop/Start Technology not working
If your start-stop system is experiencing problems, take a look at some of our troubleshooting suggestions.
- The system is turned off
- The battery is low
- The air conditioning is on
- Seatbelts are unfastened
- The bonnet is not closed properly
- A parking aid is active
- The wheel is turned at an acute angle
- The car is on a steep hill
